The island covers an area of 5,632,86 square kilometers, consisting of mountains stretching from the western tip across to the eastern side, with Mt. Agung as its holiest and highest peak.

The volcanic range divides the island into two separate fertile plains, which are constantly cultivated with rice as the staple crop.
